On the 19th - 21st of January, the Choir was able to hold the first socially distanced, face-to-face camp since January 2020!
Meeting in 2020 proved very difficult for the OZY Youth Choir, however the beauty of our online choir is that we were able to transition to being completely online without much difficulty. That being said, all members of the choir value and enjoy the face-to-face and in person practices, so when the opportunity to have a COVID-Safe camp arose we had to take it.
7 of our older choir members undertook a quiet, intimate camp out at the beautiful Canyonleigh in the Southern Highlands. This camp focussed on the individual performance and branding of each choir member as we have several choir members working to become professional musicians.
After arriving and setting up on the first day, each of the choir members took part in a photoshoot. The shoot allowed everyone to experience an element of the music/performance industry and get a feel for posing, staging and the behind the scenes of what makes a good photo.
The second day consisted of smaller one-on-one sessions between our mob leaders and the other campers. Each session focussed on things such as performance tips, advice regarding set lists, biography writing and song writing. The day ended in a small concert, with each camper performing a song they’d been working on. This allowed everyone to apply their knowledge and receive coaching on their performance.
On the final day, after pack down and breakfast, we were set a challenge to wrap up camp with a speed song-writing session, where each choir member contributed to writing a new song…something to keep an eye out for.
Despite a small camp, it was very fruitful and was great to finally be back face-to-face. Everyone had a great time and we can’t wait for the next COVID-safe camp!
A massive thank you to Choir Creative Director OJ Rushton for organising the camp, and to Kylie Stefanuik for being our amazing camp Mum!
